PortionNest terms of use
Last updated 22 October 2026 · Version 1.0 · Applies from the app's public release
These terms apply when you use the PortionNest app and its online service. PortionNest is run by Lachlan Pinyon, a sole trader in Queensland, Australia ("PortionNest", "we", "us").
By creating an account or using PortionNest, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your personal information and forms part of these terms.
Who can use PortionNest
- PortionNest is for adults. You must be 18 or older to create an account, and there are no child profiles.
- One account per person. Give accurate details when you sign up, including your date of birth.
- Keep your sign-in details to yourself. You're responsible for what happens on your account, so tell us straight away at hello@portionnest.au if you think someone else has used it.
- If you sign in with Apple or Google, their terms also apply to that sign-in.
Households and sharing links
- You can start a household and invite other adults with a link or code. Only invite people you know and trust.
- Household members share recipes, meal plans, shopping lists, pantry and prices, and can see what the Privacy Policy describes. Anyone can leave a household at any time.
- When you send a recipe or diary link, whoever opens it first can see what you shared until it expires or you stop sharing. You're responsible for who you send it to.
Your content
Recipes, photos, notes and ratings you add stay yours. We don't claim ownership of them.
- The permission you give us: a free, non-exclusive licence to store, copy, resize and display your content, only as needed to run PortionNest and show it to the people you choose (your household, a link recipient, or everyone if you share a recipe). This ends when you delete the content or your account, except for the copies described below and backups that are cleared within 30 days.
- Private by default: recipes are private unless you switch on "Share with everyone". Then the recipe and its photos appear in the public library with your username until you choose "Stop sharing" or delete it.
- Only share what's yours: only share recipes you wrote and photos you took. Recipes scanned or imported from a book or website can't be shared publicly. When you switch on sharing, you confirm the recipe and photos are your own.
- Copies others keep: other people can view, cook and save their own copy of a recipe you share, for their personal use. Copies they saved stay with them after you stop sharing, and you give them permission to keep using those copies personally.
- Household recipes: recipes you wrote for a household stay with that household, without your name, if you leave or delete your account.
Community rules
There is no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive users. You must not post or share content that is offensive, hateful, harassing, sexually explicit, violent, illegal, dangerous (for example, unsafe food-safety advice), misleading, spam, or that infringes anyone's rights, including copyright and privacy.
- Reporting: anyone can report a public recipe or photo from the app. We review reports within 24 hours and may hide or remove content while we look into it.
- Blocking: you can block a user so you no longer see their recipes.
- Enforcement: we may remove content, warn, suspend or close accounts that break these terms. Serious or repeated breaches lead to permanent removal.
- Copyright complaints: if you think something on PortionNest copies your work, email hello@portionnest.au with a link to it and details of your work. We'll remove it if the complaint is valid and let the person who shared it know.
Nutrition, health stars and allergens
PortionNest gives general information, not medical advice. Talk to your GP or an Accredited Practising Dietitian about your diet and targets, especially if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition, or have or have had an eating disorder.
- Nutrition figures are estimates calculated from the Australian Food Composition Database (Food Standards Australia New Zealand) and the ingredients you confirm.
- Estimated health stars are worked out with the published Health Star Rating calculation on a recipe's ingredients. They are not an official Health Star Rating and aren't endorsed by the Health Star Rating system.
- Allergen checks are best-effort and can be wrong or incomplete. Always check labels and ingredients yourself, especially for serious allergies. In an emergency, such as a severe allergic reaction, call 000.
- Product details from Open Food Facts and from label photos can be wrong or out of date. Check the pack.
- AI-suggested recipes are generated automatically and are a starting point only. Check cooking times, that food is cooked through, and every ingredient's label for allergens.
- Tips, guidance cards and the weekly round-up are general information based on Australian health guidelines and don't take your full circumstances into account.
Using the service fairly
You must not:
- copy, scrape or bulk-download the recipe library or other users' content
- try to access accounts, households or data that aren't yours
- interfere with, overload or try to break PortionNest's security
- reverse engineer the app, except where the law allows
- use the AI recipe feature to generate content that breaks the community rules
- use PortionNest to sell or advertise anything without our permission
The service
- PortionNest is free. If we ever add paid features, we'll tell you first and never charge you without your agreement.
- We may change, add or stop features. We'll tell you in the app about significant changes, and give at least 30 days' notice before closing the service so you can export your data.
- We work to keep PortionNest running, but it may sometimes be unavailable, for example during maintenance or outages. Offline changes sync when you reconnect.
Liability and your consumer rights
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, or any other right or liability that can't lawfully be excluded.
Apart from those rights, and to the extent the law allows:
- PortionNest is provided as is, without any promise that it will be error-free or always available
- we aren't liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss caused by content other users share, information from third-party services, or your reliance on estimates, allergen checks or AI suggestions without checking them as these terms ask
- where our liability can be limited, it is limited to supplying the service again or fixing the problem
Ending your account
- You can delete your account at any time in Settings → Account, or as the Privacy Policy describes if you no longer have the app.
- We may suspend or close your account if you break these terms, if the law requires it, or if we close the service. Unless it's a serious breach or we're legally prevented, we'll tell you why and give you a chance to export your data first.
- Sections that by their nature should continue after your account ends (such as copies others keep, and liability) keep applying.
If you downloaded PortionNest from the App Store
- These terms are between you and PortionNest, not Apple. We, not Apple, are responsible for the app and its content.
- Your licence to use the app is limited to Apple-branded devices you own or control, as the App Store usage rules allow.
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app.
- If the app fails to meet any applicable warranty, you can tell Apple, and Apple will refund any purchase price (PortionNest is free). Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for handling any claims about the app, including product liability, failure to meet legal or regulatory requirements, consumer protection, privacy, and intellectual property claims.
- You confirm you're not in a country subject to a US Government embargo, and aren't on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and can enforce them against you.
Changes, governing law and contact
- Changes: we'll show you any significant change to these terms in the app before it applies. If you keep using PortionNest after that, the new terms apply. If you don't agree, you can delete your account.
- Governing law: these terms are governed by the laws of Queensland, Australia, and the courts of Queensland can hear any dispute. Before going to court, please contact us so we can try to sort it out.
- If part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
- Contact: questions or concerns to hello@portionnest.au. The current terms are always available in Settings and at portionnest.au/terms.
